Chapter 1
On the day of my family gathering, Lucas Shaw was a no-show.
I held back my tears as my parents and I went door to door, apologizing to our relatives.
In my hometown, if a son-in-law skipped the the family gathering, it was seen as a big sign of disrespect toward his wife''s family. It would shame our relatives and draw criticism from others.
Before our wedding, I had emphasized this to Lucas multiple times. He had promised me with absolute certainty that he would not miss it.
Yet, now…
My parents seemed to have aged overnight. With hunched shoulders, they bowed slightly as they explained to our relatives.
“We’re terribly sorry. Our son-in-law had an urgent matter to attend to and simply couldn’t get away. The next time he’s back, he’ll personally come to make amends.”
Even though our relatives looked displeased, they accepted my parents’ sincere apology.
Except for a few of my uncles, who were absolutely furious.
“That brat! What could possibly be more important than the family gathering? Does he not understand priorities? Did all that schooling amount to nothing?"
“Let’s go! We’re heading to North City to find his parents! I’d love to ask them how they raised their son!”
Their anger grew, fists pounding the table loudly.
My youngest uncle, his face dark with rage, pulled out his phone and was about to book a flight right then and there.
I quickly stopped him.
“Uncle, there’s no need for that.”
Just moments ago, I saw a new post from his junior on social media.
[Doing my best to fulfill Mom’s wish. Hoping for a miracle in her recovery.]
Right below it, Lucas had left a comment.
[Hugs. I’m always here for you.]
Now, he was completely focused on her. He did not seem to care about me at all.
You can control someone’s actions, but you can never control their heart.
Even if my uncles had forced him to attend the family gathering, it probably would not have been any better than him not showing up at all.
It took two full days for my parents and me to visit every single relative, apologizing over and over.
My parents, who had spent their entire lives being honest, hard working people, wiped away their tears and sighed. "We must have done something really wrong in a past life to deal with this at our age."
My eyes filled with tears instantly.
I sent Lucas two messages:
[The family gathering is over. The relatives are upset, and my parents are humiliated.]
[If you come now, there’s still a chance to fix things.]
However, my messages were left unanswered. The night passed without a single response.
I could not sleep at all. My grip on the phone was so tight that my nails were almost breaking.
Lucas, you can hurt me all you want, but you had no right to let my parents, who treated you like their own son, suffer like this.
The next morning, I got up early and went straight to a law firm, requesting their most skilled divorce attorney.
After explaining my situation, I made my demand clear.
“I want to sue my husband for bigamy and ensure he walks away with nothing.”
The lawyer did not look surprised. She had handled enough cases to be unfazed by anything at this point.
“Ma’am, to sue for bigamy, you must have solid proof that your husband has legally registered his marriage twice or is in a common-law marriage with someone else."
Just then, I received a video call from his junior.
The background was a hospital hallway. Her eyes were glistening with emotion, and no matter how hard she tried, she could not hide the joy on her face.
“Naomi, we did it! I’m pregnant with Lucas’s baby!”
